Control Who Can Post in a Group

This article covers how to turn off/on post creation in a group for members

The Groups system gives network owners and admins the ability to create spaces for all kinds of reasons. By turning off post creation for members while still allowing them to view and engage with content, owners and admins can use groups in more flexible ways, from curated content hubs and resource libraries to announcement spaces and guided member experiences. This gives communities more control over how content is shared, organized, and delivered to the right members.

Before you begin

  • You must be a network owner or community admin to change group settings.

  • Member posting is enabled by default.

  • Group admins can publish whenever the Posts menu item is visible in the group.

  • If Posts is hidden, nobody can publish in that group from the member applications.

Change member posting

  1. In Control Center, open Groups.

  2. Select the group you want to configure.

  3. Click the Edit Group button (top right).

  4. Select Settings.

  5. Find Allow Posting.

  6. Turn it on to allow members to create posts, or turn it off to limit post creation to group admins.

  7. Confirm the toggle shows the intended state.

Expected result

When Allow Posting is on, members and group admins can see the + button in the group's menu, and create posts.

When Allow Posting is off, members cannot see the + button in the groups menu and create posts, but group admins can.

Hide "Posts" and posting completely

To remove the Posts area in groups for everyone:

  1. Open Edit Group.

  2. Select Menu Items.

  3. Hide the "Posts" menu item by hovering over the menu item and clicking the "eye" icon on/off.

Hiding "Posts" removes posting for both members and group admins.

Troubleshooting

A group admin cannot publish form the member applications

Confirm that "Posts" menu item is visible in Edit / Menu Items.

Members can still create posts

Confirm Allow Posting is off for the correct group and that the setting was saved.

Members cannot create posts after the setting is enabled

Confirm Posts is visible and ask the member to refresh, reopen the group in a current Honeycommb client, or kill their app and reopen it.
