Member Applications Overview

A high-level description of the member application experience.

Updated over a week ago

The Honeycommb member applications are designed to be a "familiar" experience, leaning on concepts and interfaces found in common open social networks, like Instagram, Facebook, and others. The intention behind this is to make your network easier for your members to learn and use, increasing overall engagement and happiness with your community.

Logged In vs Logged Out Experience

Like Instagram, Twitter (X), and Facebook, Honeycommb networks require a person to be logged in to experience your network. A dynamic home feed, access rules, and other customizations require the Honeycommb system to know who the user is.

The logged-out experience is your network's Log In / Registration page, a page you can customize with text, color, and artwork.

Primary Navigation

Navigation items found in the primary menu of both the web and mobile applications.

Home Feed

The first thing a member sees when they log in is their dynamic home feed - posts featured by an admin, and posts from profiles they follow and groups they're in. Posts act as their own engagement object, can be liked, commented on, replied to, followed, and shared (sharing can be turned off). *If marked as "Premium", posts can be put behind a subscription pay wall.

Admins should think about their members' first-time logged-in experience and leverage featured posts, auto-follow profiles, and auto-join groups. These customization features can be found in your Control Center > Community Settings > Onboarding

Discover

The Discover area is your network's browse feature, where members can discover content, profiles, and groups that don't get distributed to their Home Feed. The Discover area is customizable, where sections can be arranged, hidden, and renamed using Language Customizations.

Post

(first action on Wed, 3rd action in mobile web, and mobile apps)

Members can create and post content by clicking the "+" button. Like open social platforms, Honeycommb offers simple formatting, and rich media posting (images, video, and livestreaming). Posting will distribute content to the authors profile, the Discover area (if certain areas have been made available, and to the Home Feed of members who follow the author. *This feature can be put behind a subscription pay wall.

Activites

A member's "Activities" are a catalogue of actions taken on their profile and content, including comments and replies on posts. Quick actions associated with an activity type can be taken to increase engagement. Activities include: New followers, new subscribers, likes to the posts, likes to comments, likes to replies, comments on posts, replies to comments, and comments and replies on posts a member follows.

Direct Messaging

A real-time, rich-media, and file-enabled messaging system for members to have one-to-one or group private messages. Direct messaging access can be customized to: 1. Allow any member to DM another member, 2. Require a mutual follow to enable members to message each other, 3. Turn off the DM feature completely. *This feature can be put behind a subscription pay wall.

Profile

Every member gets a profile page that they can personalize with an avatar, cover image, biography, and any custom fields. Areas on the profile include: 1. Posts - content created by the profile, 2. Activity - profile engagement in the network, 3. About - biography, custom field answers, groups, and any listed social accounts.

Left Side Menu

A collapsible side menu, open by default on the web, and accessed by clicking the burger menu or swiping left to right on a mobile apps, the left side navigation consists of three areas: 1. Logged In member info and menu, 2. Member Groups, 3. Menu Items.

Logged In Member Info and Member Menu

The top of the left side menu displays the logged in members info and a "more" menu (β€’β€’β€’) where members can quickly access their profile, settings, account switching, and to log out.

Member Groups

A member's groups (groups they are a member of) will appear as colored (group preference) "pills", ordered based on join date. Up to five Groups will be displayed, with the ability to view all Groups by clicking the "Show more" link. Clicking or tapping on the Group will link the member to the Group's area.

Menu Items

Found in the left side of the web and mobile applications, Menu Items is a completely customizable menu system. Create singular "Link Menu Items" or "Folder Menu Items" that can house multiple link menu items within it.

Menu Items come with a default set of items that link to primary areas in the application, like the Member Directory or Events areas. Admins can completely customize the menu by hiding/showing menu items, renaming items, rearranging items, and adding new Link or Folder Menu Items.

Default Menu Items include;

  1. Verifieds: A directory of "Verified" members (if the verified system is active)

  2. Members: A members directory

  3. Groups: A directory of open, gated, and closed groups. Private groups are not show.

  4. Hashtags: A list of hashtags and usage data used within the network

  5. Events: A directory of network and group events
