This article covers text & graphical requirements to build and update Android and iOS mobile applications.

This documentation covers the requirements needed for Honeycommb to build, submit, and have mobile applications approved “for sale” in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. This includes text and graphical assets required to build your mobile applications AND others to be used solely on your app’s product pages on the Apple App and Google Play stores.

Once the “Dedicated Mobile Apps” addon is Purchased

Honeycommb customers who have purchased the Dedicated Mobile Apps addon will unlock and have access to mobile app features in their Control Center, including; Android App Settings, iOS App Settings, and the “Shared Mobile Application Branding & Graphics” section in Branding & Graphics.

Your purchase of this addon also includes work the Honeycommb graphics team will do to create the graphics required to submit your applications to Google and Apple, like app icons and screenshots.

Shared Mobile Application Branding and Graphics

Find the Shared Mobile Application Branding and Graphics section in the “Branding & Graphics” page: Control Center > Community Settings > Branding & Graphics.

These graphics are shared across both your Android and iOS mobile apps. You can update these graphics at any time and they will take effect across applications immediately.

Mobile Loading Image

An image, taking up the entire phone screen, displays for a few seconds while the application loads.

  • Resolution: 1200px wide, 2400px high (recommended)

  • File Type: .jpg, .gif, .png

Mobile Home Feed Logo

An image that appears in the header of the mobile app home feed

  • Resolution: 800px wide, 96px high

  • File Type: Transparent png (recommended), gif, or jpg

Onboarding Images

(optional) Onboarding images are 1-6 images you can set that allow you to explain or sell the value of your community to people who download your mobile app.

  • Resolution: 768px wide, 1024px high

  • File Type: .jpg, .gif, .png

Mobile Application Requirements

Both Apple & Google have text, selection, and graphical requirements that must be met to offer your mobile application in their app stores.

***Your mobile launch fee covers the creation of required mobile graphics by the Honeycommb graphics team. Email [email protected] any logo files and brand guidelines for the brand that will be used on your dedicated mobile apps.

***Honeycommb will create your initial screenshots for you. Select at least two and up to eight from this set of available screenshot templates. Email [email protected] with your screenshot selections and links to profiles, posts, etc. within your network that should be used in each screenshot.

Android App Settings Requirements

Find “Android App Settings” in your network’s Control Center > Community Settings > Android App Settings. All fields are required.

Google Play Store Name (not app name)

Used throughout the Google Play Store wherever your app is listed, including your app’s product page title, for display and app store search purposes. This is NOT used as the name under the app icon on Android devices (“Community Name” is).

  • 30 character limit

Short Description

Displayed only on your Google Play Store product page under your app name. Use this to quickly give app browsers an understanding of the essence of your community.

  • 80 character limit

Full Description

Displayed under your Google Play Store screenshots on your application’s product page, your full description allows you to further sell visitors to your product page. Refrain from discussing commerce within the application.

  • 4000 character limit

Android Adaptive App Icon

Supply separate foreground and background layers allowing Android devices to perform interesting visual presentations and animation. We recommend learning about how to make Adaptive App Icons here.

  • Foreground Layer: 512px x 512px (typically artwork + transparency)

  • Background Layer: 512px x 512px (no transparency)

Android Notification Icon

When a member has new app notifications, this one-color icon is displayed in the notifications bar on Android devices when new notifications are unread.

  • Resolution: Square, 96px x 96px resolution

  • File Type: png (recommended with transparency)

  • Recommendation: Simple, bold, recognizable brand shape

Google Play Featured Graphic

This graphic is used anywhere Google chooses to feature your app within the Google Play Store ecosystem.

  • Resolution: 1024px wide x 500px high

  • File Type: .jpg, .gif, .png

Google Play Icon

A small graphic used in areas of the Google Play Store to present your application in listings and directories. Use the same artwork from the adaptive app icon by combining the foreground and background layers.

  • Resolution: Square, minimum 512px x 512px resolution

  • File Type: .jpg, .gif, .png

Google Play Store Product Page Screenshots

The Google Play Store screenshots help “sell” your app to visitors of your app's product page. Google recommends 4 screenshots. Google Play Screenshot Guide

  • Portrait resolution: 1440px wide x 2880px high (1:2)

  • 2 screenshots required (no more than 8)

iOS App Settings Requirements

Find “iOS App Settings” in your network’s Control Center > Community Settings > iOS App Settings.

Apple App Store Name (not app name)

Used throughout the Apple App Store wherever your app is listed, including your app’s product page title, for display and app store search purposes.

  • 30 character limit

Subtitle

Displayed only on your Apple App Store product page under your app name. Use this to quickly give app browsers an understanding of the essence of your community.

  • 30 character limit

Description

Displayed under your Apple App Store iPhone screenshots on your product page, your long description allows you to fully describe your community to prospects.

  • 3,930 character limit

Promotional Text

Your app’s promotional text appears above the description on your product page. Consider using this to share the latest news about your app.

  • 170 character limit

Marketing URL

Displayed in your Apple App Store product pages Information section. Direct customers to an online location where you promote your community.

App Categories

Select application categories to help your app get found. Select up to two categories to further help your app get found but it is not required.

  • Primary category selection required. Secondary category optional. “Social Networking” is a common primary category.

App Store Keywords

(Optional) Add keywords to help people find your app when using Apple App Store search. Consider your category, what defines your network, what makes it unique, and what keywords people would use to find your app.

Separate keywords with a comma

  • 100 character limit

iOS App Icon

Piece of art displayed on the iPhone home screen that users to tap to launch your app. Changes will update after your iOS app is submitted, approved, and users update their app.

  • Resolution: Square, minimum 1024px x 1024px resolution

  • File Type: .jpg, .gif, .png

6.5 App Store Product Screenshots

6.5 Apple App Store screenshots for App store visitors with newer iPhones. Screenshots help sell your app to product page visitors. Apple App Store screenshot guidelines from Apple. You app can get rejected if these guidelines aren’t followed.

  • Minimum of 1 screenshot

  • Resolution: 1242px wide, 2688px high

5.5 App Store Product Screenshots

5.5 Apple App Store screenshots for App store visitors with older iPhones. This set should be a (smaller) replica of your 6.5 screenshots.

  • Minimum of 1 screenshot

  • Resolution: 1242px wide, 2208px high

Updating Android & iOS App Settings (text & graphics)

In these sections, customers can complete and update text and graphical requirements for their mobile applications.

Note that any changes made to the Android App Settings and/or iOS App Settings pages after the mobile applications are available in the app stores requires an application update for the changes to take effect. Honeycommb typically updates all of their Android & iOS mobile applications every 3-4 weeks.
